Crafting original works for one-of-a-kind vehicles
The makers of early classic cars such as Pre-War Rolls-Royce and Bentley would only supply a rolling chassis, engine and gearbox to their customer who would then commission one of a number of specialist coachbuilders to craft and construct a body to their bespoke requirements. As a result, no two cars were ever truly identical. This presents a challenge for our carpenters – as they need to possess in-depth knowledge of the cars they’re aiming to restore which is difficult when many arrive with little or nothing left of the original bodywork. As you’d expect from Fiennes Classics, our craftsmen are specialists in replicating the original or re-building it to the bespoke requirements of the owner.
The truest meaning of bespoke woodcraft
Whether it’s mirror-matching adjoining sheets of veneer that came from the same section of a single tree, or hand crafting a new walnut-burr steering wheel from scratch our carpenters achieve the finest woodcrafted results. One of the largest projects they undertake is the full rebuild of a car frame and it’s crucial that doors, bonnets, and windscreens are all gapped correctly before going onto skinning. And as there can be multiple metal skins wrapped around one edge, marking it out correctly is a complex task too. Like an artist building up a masterpiece layer by layer, the new frame step by step takes on its form.
